Introduction

BEACON is a cloud computing platform, available on a website and by mobile application, which supports the Agricultural Insurance (AgI) companies to achieve a better risk and damage assessment within their AgI products; enables them to reduce the number of on-site visits from claim verification and to reduce their overall operational and administrative costs for monitoring and handling AgI contracts and allows them to design more accurate and personalised contracts. The BEACON platform, building upon state-of-the-art Earth Observation (EO), weather intelligence, ICT and Blockchain technologies, provides insurance companies operating (or wishing to operate) in the AgI market, with robust and cost-effective tools and services to overcome several limitation in the AgI market and sector. It confidently empowers AgI underwriting procedures and premium calculations, by providing access to, and analysing EO and latest historical and localised meteorological data. Using satellite-based information, coupled with weather intelligence and high-resolution weather forecast, BEACON enables a more accurate damage assessment and claims adjustment along with a potential fraud detection. Moreover, BEACON empowered by blockchain technology, provides a Smart Contracts service, enabling an automated execution of contract clauses to insured parties, reducing the admin costs and burden. An early alert system for potential crop risk, relate to weather conditions, enables AgI companies to timely inform and advice their customers about all necessary actions to mitigate the impact of in their crops. The BEACON website was created and developed as part of the project "Boosting Agricultural Insurance based on Earth Observation data" funded by the European Union's "Innovation Programme Horizon 2020", by virtue of the grant agreement no. 821964, and is coordinated by the Societe Anonyme "Karavias Underwriting".
